Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat will be the first Chief of Defence Staff. General Rawat has been named for CDS a day before his retirement. He will be the first officer to hold this post, which was recently approved by Cabinet Committee.
India’s Chief of Defence staff will function as a single point officer to advise the goverment on different matters related to military administration. His main job is to focus on synergy between all three services Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. General Bipin Rawat will handover the charge of Army Chief to Lieutinant General Manoj Mukund Narvane on Tuesday here in New Delhi.
An alumnus of National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun General Bipin Rawat was commissioned in 5th Battalion of Gorkha Rifles in 1978 and became Army Chief on 31st December 2016. His retirement is due for tomorrow, however he will continue his services as CDS. Born in Saina village of Pauri in Uttarakhand, General Rawat is son of Lt.Gen, Lakshman Singh Rawat. Genral Bipin Rawat has commanded infantory battalion, an infantry division and a corps in the North East.
Although formal decision was taken last week but the announcemnet about appointing Chief of Defence Staff was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech on August 15th this year.
