IPS Ashok Kumar, who retired from the post of Director General of Police of Uttarakhand, has been appointed the Vice Chancellor of Motilal Nehru Sports University located in Rai, Haryana. Ashok Kumar will assume his new charge of the state’s first sports university on March 1. Mr. Kumar and his family members are already associated with the world of sports.
The first Vice Chancellor of Rai Sports University, SS Deshwal, had resigned a few days ago and recently his resignation was accepted. By the way, Deshwal is also a retired IPS officer. Before him, cricketer Kapil Dev, who was the captain of the World Cup winning Indian cricket team, was made the Vice Chancellor here but he did not take the appointment.
Ashok Kumar, a 1989 batch UP cadre officer of the Indian Police Service, retired from the post of DGP in Uttarakhand on November 20, 2023. Although he is a resident of Panipat, but now he along with his family is settled in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. He himself is a badminton player and has been a champion in the All India Police Badminton Competition. His daughter Kuhu Garg is also a badminton player and has won medals in many international competitions. She is still playing badminton. Alaknanda Ashok, wife of former IPS Ashok Kumar, is also connected with sports as Joint Cecretary in the Indian Olympic Association.
Haryana cadre IPS SS Deshwal, who retired as Director General from Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in December 2022, was appointed the first Vice Chancellor in Sports University. Former DGP of Uttarakhand Ashok Kumar is appointed Vice Chancellor on the post vacant due to the resignation of Mr. Deshwal. However, the reasons for the resignation of SS Deshwal , in mid academic session, are not yet known.
Ashok Kumar’s Haryana connection:
Ashok Kumar, who has been appointed Vice Chancellor of Motilal Nehru Sports University, is a native of Kurana village of Panipat. He is alumni of IIT Delhi, has also studied from Hindu College, Sonipat. IPS Ashok Kumar has served in the Border Security Force (BSF) for three years and also in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for one year.
Although Ashok Kumar was an officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre of 1989 batch, but after the formation of Uttarakhand state in the year 2000, he moved there.
