Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh was cremated with state honours on Saturday. The mortal remains of Dr. Manmohan Singh , the leader who shaped the economic progress of modern India, was brought to Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat on an Indian Army gun carriage. Here, all three services saluted him. After this, the last rites were performed with state honours. His elder daughter Upinder Kaur lit the funeral pyre.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, died on Thursday at the age of 92. Dr. Singh was ill for a long time and was also admitted to the hospital for treatment, but he spent the last days of his life at home. On Thursday evening he  suddenly fainted at his home and  was brought to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)  at 8:06 pm. According to the AIIMS bulletin, he breathed his last at 9:51 pm.

Prominent personalities paid  tribute to Dr. Manmohan Singh, a well-known economist. President Draupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi were present .

The family of former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh includes his wife Gursharan Kaur and daughters – Upinder Singh, Daman Singh and Amrit Singh.

Born in 1932 in a village called Gah (now in Pakistan and then British-ruled India) during British rule in India, Manmohan Singh studied economics to find a way to eradicate poverty in the vast nation.

He studied at Cambridge and Oxford. At Cambridge, he secured first place in economics and completed his doctorate at Oxford. He won  scholarships to study in both universities. Dr. Manmohan Singh worked at many senior civil service positions. He served as Governor of India’s central bank i.e. Reserve Bank of India (RBI Governor) and also worked in various jobs with global agencies including the United Nations.

Manmohan Singh’s Family:

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s eldest daughter Upinder Singh  is a distinguished historian. She is currently the Dean of Faculty at Ashoka University in Haryana. She has written several acclaimed books on Indian history. Her work ‘History of Ancient and Early Medieval India’ has earned her the Infosys Prize in Social Sciences. Upinder is married to Vijay Tankha, a renowned author known for his extensive work on ancient Greek philosophy.

Daman Singh, Manmohan Singh’s second daughter, is a writer and is known for her works exploring personal and social themes. Her book ‘Strictly Personal’ presents an intimate biography of her parents, while ‘The Last Frontier’ highlights the relationship between people and forests in Mizoram. Daman Kaur is married to Ashok Patnaik, an Indian Police Service officer who previously served as the CEO of India’s National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID).

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s youngest daughter Amrit Singh is an international human rights lawyer. She teaches law at Stanford in the United States and advocates for global justice. Her academic journey spans prestigious institutions such as Yale, Oxford and Cambridge, reflecting her commitment to excellence.
