Alok Sharma , an officer of the 1991 batch of Indian Police Service has been appointed the Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG), the elite security force responsible for the security of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. IPS Alok Sharma belongs to Aligrah in Uttar Pradesh.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Friday approved the appointment of Alok Sharma, IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He is currently working as Additional Director General in the SPG. Alok’s tenure has not been specified in the order but he will remain at the post of director from the date of assumption of charge until further instructions as per the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel.
IPS Alok Sharma is currently serving as the Additional Director of the SPG since the passing of Arun Kumar Sinha on September 6, 2023. As director , A K Sinha served the SPG from 2016 to 2023, which is the longest tenure of any serving director of this force .
A resident of Aligarh, Alok Sharma is a science graduate with a B.Tech (mechanical) degree. He is recognised for his meticulous planning as well as for tech savvy approach to policing. IPS Alok sharma has served as Superintendent of police in Unnao , Moradabad and Bulandshahr district of UP. He was Inspector General of Police in Prayagraj , Meerut and Bareilly. He successfully organised the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in 2013 as IG. After his promotion, Alok Sharma was shifted to Police Training School in Meerut as ADG in 2016.
IPS Alok Sharma had postings in Uttarakhand before moving to Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)in 2017. Later that year , IPS Alok Sharma was appointed as IG in SPG.
