If such policemen do not reduce obesity , by the coming 15th August, then they may have to leave the police service. Such an ultimatum has been given by the Top Cop of Assam Police Gyanendra Pratap Singh himself. The aim behind this is to make the state police efficient and fit to serve the public. The criteria that has been fixed for this is the body mass index which should be less than 30.

According to a survey, there are about 600 such policemen in the Assam Police who can be affected by this order. Signs of obesity have been found in these police personnel. It has been said in the order that on August 15, the data of BMI of all the policemen will be collected. Whose BMI will be more than 30 i.e. the one who is found to be obese will be asked to take voluntary retirement from the service (VRS). Only police personnel will be exempted from this order who are in the category of obesity due to thyroidism or any such health related issue.

Director General of Assam Police GP Singh has made this order public through a tweet message. But in this he has cited the direction of the Chief Minister of the state in this regard. He has said that this order will be applicable to everyone, whether he is an ordinary policeman posted in Assam Police, an IPS officer or an officer of the State Police Service i.e. ASP. GP Singh has also included himself in this.

GP Singh is a 1991 batch IPS officer of Assam Meghalaya cadre and was handed over the command of Assam Police in February 2023 itself. Before being given the responsibility of DGP , GP Singh was called in parent cadre in December 2019 and was appointed Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) in Assam . That was the time when the situation was deteriorating here because of the anti-CAA movement. Prior to this IPS GP Singh was on central deputation in New Delhi. He was the IG in the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and before that he was serving in the Special Protection Group (SPG) which was formed in view of the security of the Prime Minister, his family members and the former Prime Ministers.

It has been said in the latest order that on August 15, the policemen who are found to be obese will be given 3 months time to reduce their weight. They will be re-examined in November. Even after this, if found obese, he or she may have to leave the job. This rule will be applicable to the personnel posted in all the units of the Assam Police.GP Singh will also get his BMI done on 16 August.

Assam police consist of 70,000 personnel and number of 680 means about 1 percent of the entire force. Many of these policemen became obese due to alcohol addiction or bad eating habits, and the reason for many being obese could be due to poor lifestyle or carelessness.
