Former DGP of Bihar DP Ojha
Former Director General of Police of Bihar DP Ojha passed away on Friday. He was 82 years old.  Mr. Ojha was an officer of the 1967 batch of Indian Police Service.

The State Government removed him from the post of DGP just two months before his retirement. Taking action against Siwan’s ‘ BAHUBALI ‘ MP Mohammad Shahabuddin and being vocal about the ‘ criminals –  politicians nexus ‘ was the reason for his premature departure from the post of Bihar Police Chief. By the way, Shahabuddin is also no longer in this world. Shahabuddin passed away in 2021.

More than his appointment as DGP, IPS DP Ojha made headlines when he was removed in December 2003, two months before his scheduled retirement month i.e. February 2004. At that time, Bihar was ruled by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). It was the last phase of the Chief Ministership of RJD President Lalu Yadav’s wife Rabri Devi.

Everyone knows that Shahabuddin was very influential and despite many pending criminal cases, hardly any strict action was taken against him. DP Ojha dared to initiate action against the Shahabuddin  , which angered CM Rabri Devi and RJD National President Lalu Prasad Yadav. In fact, in a report submitted by DP Ojha to the Bihar government, he revealed that Shahabuddin had links with Pakistan-based organizations.

DP Ojha was removed and Waris Hayat was appointed DGP of Bihar in his place.

DP Ojha was surrounded by controversies in 2003 when he said in a public function that the people of Bihar have handed over power to “ruffians, who can touch the feet of criminals lodged in jail.” Although Ojha did not name anyone in his speech, the RJD government ruling in Bihar accused DP Ojha of violating the service code with this comment.

A senior IPS officer said that DP Ojha had opened the way for the subsequent Nitish Kumar government to start a speedy trial against Mohammad Shahabuddin. Later, Shahabuddin was convicted in more than half a dozen cases and since 2009, Shahabuddin was also disqualified from contesting Lok Sabha elections.
