Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated the first phase of Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Assam and claimed that it will become the best police training academy in India. Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present on the occasion of the academy’s inauguration.
In his address, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that in the next 5 years, Lachit Borphukan Police Academy will be ranked first among all the police academies across the country. He mentioned the history of the brave warrior of Assam, Lachit Borphukan, who had given Assam victory against the Mughals. He said that the seed sown today in the form of Lachit Borphukan Police Academy will one day become a huge banyan tree and will shade the policing of the entire country. The Home Minister said that this academy will become a pilgrimage like Kashi for the policing of not only Assam but the entire Northeast and a new beginning of peace will be made from here.
The first phase of Lachit Borphukan Academy has been completed at a cost of Rs 167 crore and a total of Rs 1050 crore will be spent on its three phases. Shri Shah, while referring to the modern facilities available here, said that earlier Assam police used to go to other states for training, but in the last 8 years, there has been such a change in the governance of the state that now 2000 policemen from Goa and Manipur have taken training in this police academy.
The government has increased the crime conviction ratio in Assam from 5 percent to 25 percent. Amit Shah said that earlier the police in Assam was limited to fighting against terrorism, today it is working for the successful implementation of three new criminal laws brought to protect the rights of citizens. The crime conviction ratio in Assam has increased from 5 percent to 25 percent.
