Indian Police Service officer Surendra Singh Yadav, who remained in the news for his experimental style of working in Chandigarh, has been suddenly removed. Shri Yadav has been transferred  to the Border Security Force on deputation . IPS Raj Kumar Singh has been asked to take charge   of the post of Director General of Police Chandigarh , till further orders.  Yadav’s transfer is believed to be the result of infighting among police officers.

Surendra Singh Yadav, originally from Rajasthan, is a 1997 batch officer of the AGMUT cadre of the Indian Police Service (IPS). He was posted as the DGP of Chandigarh in March 2024 and generally the tenure of such a post is two to three years. SS Yadav was earlier posted in Delhi Police and has held various responsibilities  in Traffic, Economic Offence Wing etc.  SS Yadav has also been the head of the Anti-Corruption Branch in Delhi. He was promoted to ADGP grade in 2022.

Within four months of Surendra Singh Yadav taking charge of Chandigarh Police, orders were issued to transfer 2,763 police personnel at the rank of  Sub-Inspector, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Head Constable and Constable. Those  large-scale transfers  are called one of the most important reshuffles in the history of the Chandigarh Police Department.

Shri Yadav recently  had ordered  a sub-inspector to be posted as SHO,   incharge of a police station. Whereas in Chandigarh,  an inspector rank police officer is posted as SHO. Earlier, Shri Yadav in a meeting had said that if the inspectors do not work properly, then capable  sub-inspectors can also be appointed as SHOs. Not only this, Yadav had also asked the senior police officers to do night patrolling for better security of the city.

SS Yadav has been sent on deputation to BSF. His transfer orders were issued on April 1, but many people initially considered it to be April Fool’s Day news because there was no possibility of this happening.  Yadav had barely completed a year at the post of DGP Chandigarh and his tenure was still remaining.
