A Punjab court has granted one-day police remand of Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Malvinder Singh Sidhu who was  arrested for assaulting a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Varinder Singh in Vigilance Headquarters on Thursday. Mohali police had presented AIG Malvinder Singh in the local court.

It is alleged that during the interrogation on Wednesday, Malvinder Singh misbehaved, assaulted, attacked and threatened DSP Varinder Singh and other personnel at the Vigilance Headquarters. He tried to damage some documents as well.

On the other hand, AIG Malvinder Singh alleged that he is being implicated in a conspiracy. He said that he is being targeted because he has raised the voice of officers from a community and also because he is father of a daughter.

What happened on Wednesday:

Punjab Police AIG Malvinder Singh is in the human rights section and was posted in vigilance in Patiala earlier.  Vigilance has registered a case against him for misusing his powers and having assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. He was called earlier also for investigation in this connection but he did not turn up  and kept procrastinating. When Malvinder Singh Sidhu reached Vigilance Headquarters for questioning on Wednesday, he had two mobile phones which he wanted to keep with him. Vigilance officials told him that he cannot keep the cellphone with him as it would affect the investigation, while Malvinder Singh remained adamant on not leaving the mobile phones.

The argument between AIG and other officials  reached the point of abuse . Both phones were taken from AIG Malvinder Singh but on  suspicion, when search was conducted, a voice recorder hidden under his clothes was also found. That too was taken out.

Police said  that during this entire episode, Malvinder Singh misbehaved, attacked and pushed DSP Varinder Singh. During the scuffles , the glasses worn by DSP Varinder Singh also broke. As the matter escalated, senior officials were informed and local police were  called on.  An FIR was registered on the  complaint of DSP Varinder Singh, against AIG Varinder Singh. The FIR carries various sections of IPC that includes 353 (assault on public servant),  183 (resisting to take property by lawful authority), 323 (assault) 506 (threatening to kill).

Meanwhile ,  AIG Malvinder Singh’s wife and children protested outside the headquarters, when he was being interrogated at the vigilance headquarters on wednesday. They said that the AIG was called for questioning in the morning but he was not released till evening.  His phones also remained switched off. The family said that AIG Sidhu was being deliberately harassed.

Accusation of being implicated in a false case:

AIG Malvinder Singh had held a press conference at Mohali Press Club a few days ago in which he had accused Vigilance Bureau AIG Manmohan Singh’s reader Ranjit Singh of trying to implicate him in a false case. Ranjit Singh is his relative.

On the other hand, according to Vigilance Bureau officials, there is information against Malvinder Singh Sidhu for creating properties by taking records from officials while he was AIG of Vigilance in Patiala district. He is also accused of harassing many officers. Due to this, the Vigilance Department has prepared a source report against him and is for approval from the DGP.
