The Defence Ministry has approved the proposal for expansion of the National Cadet Corps (NCC). This expansion is expected to meet the increasing demand for NCC in educational institutions across the country. With this, the sanctioned number of NCC cadets will cross 20 lakh, which will be a record of sorts. Along with this, the number of group headquarters of NCC will also increase.

According to a press release, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has given his approval to this proposal for expansion of NCC. With this, NCC will now have a sanctioned strength of 20 lakh cadets, which will make it the largest uniformed youth organization in the world.

NCC was started in 1948 with 20,000 cadets at the time of its formation. With NCC being introduced as an optional subject as per India’s National Education Policy 2020, this expansion of NCC will be a major step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the youth to play an important role as the future leaders of the country.

This extension will lead to proportionate distribution of vacancies across all states and union territories and will reduce the waiting list of educational institutions aspiring for NCC. This expansion plan includes the establishment of four new group headquarters and two new NCC units.

An important aspect of this expansion plan is that it includes a proposal to employ ex-servicemen as NCC trainers, taking advantage of their skills and long experience. This initiative will ensure quality training to NCC cadets and create employment opportunities for them.

The Press Release expressed hope that this expansion is a symbol of the dedication towards creating leaders imbued with the spirit of discipline, leadership and service. The aim of NCC is to create an environment where youth can contribute meaningfully to the  nation building.
