 Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma has been appointed new commander of Indian Army’s Northern Command. He is going to take charge from  Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, the current head of the Northern Command, who is retiring on 30 April after completing his 15-month tenure. There was already discussion about this new posting   of General Sharma. The Union Government issued orders in this regard on 28 April.

Which posts did he hold:
Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma is currently the Deputy Chief (Strategy) of the Indian Army. Prior to this, he was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). Lieutenant General Sharma was formerly the General Officer Commanding of the Army’s II Corps.

He was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion of the Madras Regiment from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun on 19 December 1987. In his distinguished career spanning over 37 years,  Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma has served in diverse fields and has held several staff and instructional appointments. He has participated in various operations in the country and abroad. On being promoted to the rank of Brigadier, Pratik Sharma commanded the 80 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir.

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma was appointed as GOC 25 Infantry Division and Director General DG Information Warfare . He has served as the Commander of the II Corps.

Northern Command of the Army:
The Northern Command is an important command of the Indian Army, whose jurisdiction includes the border of Pakistan and China adjacent to Jammu- Kashmir and Ladakh.. The Northern Command was originally formed in 1908 as the Northern Army of the British Indian Army. After gaining independence from British rule in 1947, it was abolished but later re-established in 1972.

At present, the XIV  Corps of the Army headquartered at Leh, XV Corps headquartered at Srinagar, I Corps headquartered at Mathura in Uttar Pradesh and 16 Corps headquartered at Nagrota come under the Northern Command.
