Army observes 2018-year of disabled soldier in line of duty, govt plans financial aid

New Delhi: The Indian Army is observing the year 2018 as the year of Disabled Soldiers in line of duty. The decision comes in the wake of increasing attack on soldiers on duty, leaving many disabled, partially or completely. With stone pelters going haywire in the Jammu and Kashmir, the security agencies have been finding themselves in a tight spot as on one hand they are dealing with the terrorists and on the other the stone pelters.
In a statement, the army said that management of disabled soldiers is an onerous responsibility and there are plans to galvanise due support for the unemployable disabled soldier, his wife and his family with initial financial support to ensure a life of dignity through partially-funded entrepreneurship venture.

In a tweet, the army said,”‘आप का प्रयास – देश की प्रेरणा’. To honour soldiers who have been disabled in line of duty, while serving the Nation & to celebrate the undying spirit of ‘Soldiering’, #IndianArmy is observing the year 2018 as the ‘Year of Disabled Soldiers in Line of Duty’. #YearOfDisabled.

An official statement said that the government will provide financial assistance to soldiers, disabled in the line of duty, as it is considering the proposal of major grant to establish a separate fund for the purpose. “The government is considering the proposal of major grant to establish a separate fund which can be further enhanced by contributions from individuals, establishments and corporate sector thus facilitating meaningful initiatives for disabled soldiers,” the statement said.

The army plans to create awareness on organizational support available to soldiers and their dependents with respect to medical, rehabilitation, various beneficiary schemes of Central and State Governments, vocational opportunities and assistance for their placement. “These disabled soldiers have inspiring deeds behind them, hence, it is planned to felicitate them along with selected organizations which dedicate in their rehabilitation,” the statement said.
