Indian Army PRO Lt Col Walia arrested in ‘girlfriend’ murder case

Lieutenant Colonel Amarinder Singh Walia, Public Relations Officer of the Indian Army posted in Assam, has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman. The deceased, 36-year-old Vandanashree, is said to be a resident of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Vandanashree’s body was found in Kamrup district on 15th February. Police claimed that Army PRO Lt. Col. Walia has confessed to his involvement in the murder of Vandanashree, who was his friend.

Lieutenant Colonel Walia was posted as PRO at the headquarters of the Fourth Corps of the Indian Army at Tezpur in Assam. The woman Vandanashree had reached Varanasi from Chennai and then to Delhi. Kamrup District Superintendent of Police Hitesh Chandra Roy said that she came to Guwahati from Delhi by train on February 14th to meet Lieutenant Colonel Amarinder Singh Walia. Amarinder Walia had come to pick up the woman at the Guwahati railway station in Paltan Bazar. The night after which the dead body was found the next day, both of them were going towards Tezpur via Changsari. More facts about this will come out after investigation.

Police said that the woman was accompanied by her 4-year-old daughter who has been recovered from Howrah in West Bengal. There she was kept by Amarinder Walia till 21 February. After recovering the girl, the Howrah police handed her in the custody of Kamrup police. The family members of Vandnashree have also reached there. Police said that Lt. Col. Walia and Vandanasree knew each other for a long time and were in a relationship.

Assam Police had shared information on social media for identification of the deceased on 15th february, the day when body was found . The locket that the woman was wearing around her neck also suggested that the woman belongs to Southern part of India. Lieutenant Colonel Walia was produced in the court on Saturday morning.
