President’s rule in Manipur:
Apart from meeting Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Wednesday, the CRPF Director General also met other senior officials of the state including the Security Advisor of the Manipur Government Kuldiep Singh.
Manipur has been suffering from ethnic violence for a long time ( fresh violence since May 2023) and the state government has failed to normalize the situation. It was also being disgraced at the political level. Amidst the allegations of failure of the government machinery, there was a constant demand for the removal of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.
N Biren Singh met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on 9 February 2025 and submitted his resignation from the post of Chief Minister of Manipur. After this, when the BJP could not reach a consensus on the name of the new Chief Minister, the elected Manipur Legislative Assembly was dissolved and President’s rule was imposed on here from 16 February.
Manipur is one of those states in India where President’s rule has been imposed the most number of times. Earlier, since 1967, President’s rule has been imposed here 10 times. From 2001 to 2002, there was a period of President’s rule here for the tenth time. Now the President’s rule has been imposed here for the 11th time.
